Freedom…As children we strive to obtain it, as we mature we work to maintain it, and as we grow older we fear losing it. Have you set yourself up to ensure your freedom and independence?
There are many things you can do to set yourself up for success as you age. The best gift you can give yourself and the ones you love is a plan that outlines your wishes if you ever become incapacitated and cannot speak for yourself. Things like Health Care Directives, Wills and Power of Attorney are just a few things you can do to ensure you control your own destiny.
Educating yourself is the next best thing you can do. Educating yourself about the Health Insurance, Healthcare options, preventative health options, healthy living ideas and financial planning can set the foundation of knowledge you need to ask the right questions when the time comes you need to address challenging life situations. Horizon Health Faith in Action has recognized the need for education in our communities and offers monthly education sessions called “Dine and Discover” to help you educate yourself. It is a fun way to learn the things you need to know to ask the right questions! Join us!
Knowing you need some assistance before you have a crisis is another good idea! Prevention and planning is much safer and less costly than managing a crisis. No good decision ever comes out of a crisis! The Faith in Action program is designed to help people remain safe and independent in their own homes. Through volunteers we can provide assistance in transportation, homemaking, chores, friendly visiting and phone calls, Caregiver support and education, and Home Modification. This is accomplished by “friends helping friends and neighbors helping neighbors”.
Our volunteers really make a difference in the lives they touch! This month for example, our Home Modification crew (Half a Bubble Off Construction) built two ramps for two couples that will allow them to stay in their own homes. The biggest obstacle for these couples was getting in and out of their homes. Can you imagine being trapped in your own home, or not being able to go home from the nursing home because you can’t get in? Our program provided an affordable option for these families and has allowed them to maintain their freedom and independence!
Putting your “faith into action” by sharing your time and talents is an amazing gift to your neighbors and to yourself! Thank you to all the volunteers who give so much to help people remain safe and independent in their own homes. Together we do amazing things!
